About
Our microbial community analysis service (sometimes referred to as '16S survey sequencing', or 'metagenomics') is designed to profile the proportions of organisms present in an environment using a culture-independant method. Typically we accept DNA as the starting material, and we use this to produce a custom amplicon from a specific locus - often this is a region in the 16S ribosomal RNA gene for bacteria/archaea or an ITS gene for fungi. However, we can target custom loci if required.
16S (Bacteria)
Bacterial community analysis is usually carried out by examining the genetic variation at a locus within a 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Our standard service uses a region spanning the V3 and V4 region, but this can be customised if you require another V region or a different locus altogether.
ITS (Fungi)
Fungal community analysis is usually carried out by examining the genetic variation at a locus within an ribosomal internal transcribed spacer ('ITS') region, but this can be customised if you require another region or a different locus altogether
Custom Loci
Although we typically use a V-region from 16S gene (for bacterial) or an ITS region (for fungal) community analysis, other regions may be better suited to your particular application. Because we have developed flexible methods for our community analysis library construction, we can alter the genetic locus to that of your choice with a minimum of time and expense. Please contact us to discuss your project.
